Teater Saddlebred Enterprises, Inc. conducted their Fall Sale on October 29, 30 and 31, 2009 at the historic Red Mile Pavilion in Lexington, Kentucky. There were 509-catalogued entrants for the three-day sale. Outs constituted 19% of the catalogue while RNA's (Reserve Not Attained) held at 7% of sales. Top horses were both presented and sold for respectable prices, yet the average for horse sold fell just slightly from 2008's Fall Sale, to $4,087.00. In an economy that has affected every business, the Saddlebred industry bore small witness to the uncertainties of a challenging market.
" There is always more than one way to interpret the data", stated TSE/Tattersalls President, Ed Teater. "The broodmare market softened, an implication that long-term investment is difficult during challenging times. The market for more liquid investments appeared solid however, as the sale of the young, well-started horses remained stable. This can be interpreted as encouraging for our industry during economic downturn and recovery, continued Teater. We witnessed well-bred, well-prepared young horses rewarded with comparable bids. While other light horse markets have fallen dramatically, the Saddlebred contingent continues a respectable investment in its immediate future."
A capacity crowd was on hand for the Friday Evening Session, which featured 52 consignments from the renowned Callaway Hills Stable. Lenore Weldon was in attendance, representing the public offering from New Bloomfield, Missouri. The gallery was rewarded with every entrant catalogued and anticipated being present, and each was sold in expert order. The leading breeder of the Worldís Championship Horse Show for the past four years, Callaway Hills was recognized with the sale-topping ticket, as well as the following three highest priced entrants. The Friday Evening session was aptly prepared and saw numerous other notable exchanges.

Callaway's I'll Stand By You topped the sale with a bid of $102,000.00. The captivating two-year old son of WGC sire WC Callaway's Blue Norther and out of Callaway's She's A Winner was presented to the public with Burt Honaker in the irons. The young horse was already established and capable in five-gaits, covering ground by working well off both ends. After entertaining enthusiastic bidding, he exited the ring to applause as his ticket was presented to Larry Hodge, signing on behalf of Hillcroft Farm, LLC, Paris, Kentucky.

Kyle Peel, up, had Callaway's Take The Money And Run comfortable and steady in a full bridle. The dark chestnut mare generated bids and buzz with her square and athletic trot; she maintained a professional demeanor during her stay in the pavilion. The three-year old mare is from the first crop of foals by WC Mountainview's Heir To Fortune, and out of Hall of Fame Broodmare Callaway's Zerelda. She was selected by David Mount, Mount Saddlebreds, Simpsonville, Kentucky, for a price of $60,000.00.

Shawn Stachowski, Mantua, Ohio, is the new owner of Callaway's Already Gone. A $55,000 ticket was required for the purchase of the two-year-old chestnut gelding. By WC sire WC CH Caramac and out of Callaway's Cashflow, the able young horse was presented in a snaffle bit, and performed a beautiful and cadenced park trot. He was under the direction of Don Mace for his work in the pavilion.

Catalogued as a show prospect, Callaway's Law And Order engaged the gallery with possibility. Presented by Kyle Peel and wearing a full bridle, this three-year old colt had a huge stride and his coloring got him noticed. By Callaway's Blue Norther and out of Lover's Eyes, Callaway's Law And Order looked to be promising for any division. Ready, Set, Show, Inc., Oak Brook, Illinois, selected this consignment as an addition to their stable. The bid board lit on $50,000.00 as the big gelding left the sales ring.

Another young horse capturing attention in the gallery was a consignment from Larry and/or Judy Schultz, Saint Joseph, Michigan. Locust Grove's Big Kat is the reigning Three-Year-Old Five-Gaited Stallion/Gelding (Division 2) Reserve World's Champion. Under the direction of Bob Brison, New Bloomfield, Missouri, his impressive performance in the ring demanded a $49,500.00 bid for purchase. He was selected by Abbey, Megan and Henry Pratt, Abingdon, Virginia.

Callaway Hills Stable was once again setting the sale standard with the following four entrants. Burt Honaker was rider for the first three of the respective consignments; lot numbers 313, 320 and 333. He had done his homework with Callaway's Eight Below, who entered the venue wearing a full bridle and proceeded with five gaits. This three-year-old gelding by Callaway's Blue Norther was show ready and demanded notice, collecting a $41,000.00 nod from Bullet Concrete Materials, Inc., Conroe, Texas.

The two-year-old Callaway's Dancing In The Dark, also under saddle but steady in a snaffle bit, trotted the straightaway and was rewarded for her effort. The chestnut mare is by Nureyev, sire of 2009 WC Stravinsky, WC Pas De Deux, WC Diamonds and Orchids, etc. She is out of Callaway's Born Blessed; her second and third dams are both Hall Of Fame Broodmares. Pinekrest Farm, Inc., East Bernstadt, Kentucky, is the new owner of this delightful filly who earned a $39,000.00 ticket.

A $35,000.00 signature was required for the exchange of the three-year-old show prospect, Callaway's Wind In The Willows. Catalogued and announced as started at the rack, she demonstrated her trot for the gallery. That was enough to make a statement as this mare invited promise and possibility. By Callaway's Blue Norther, she is out of Hall Of Fame Broodmare Sweet Sachet. Mr. and/or Mrs. Michael Curry, Belpre, Ohio, made the selection.

Larry Hodge and Joan Hamilton, Springfield, Kentucky, selected Lot #341, Callaway's Never Wanted More. The two-year-old gelding was under the direction of Don Mace for his time under the lights. By Callaway's Blue Norther and out of Callaway's Claudette (dam of WGC Callaway's Copyright), the young horse looked focused and purposeful during his work. $32,000.00 sealed the purchase.

Proven winners are easy sellers, and no exception was needed for the Silver Brook Stables, Inc. consignment from Louisville, Kentucky. Callaway's My Blue Heaven has garnered top wins and ribbons at such notable shows as Rock Creek, Blue Ridge Classic, Louisville and Kansas City. Debbie Foley was in the irons as the proven mare made her own statement in the ring. Performing five gaits with certainty, she earned a $30,000.00 signature from Carolyn E. Moore Miller, Fairview Heights, Illinois. Callaway's My Blue Heaven is by Callaway's Blue Norther and out of the Caramac daughter, Callaway's Carmelina.

Friday Evening's session boasted another Don Mace mount of mention, Callaway's Another Saturday Night. Larry Hodge signed the $22,000.00 ticket for the Hillcroft Farm, Paris, Kentucky, purchase of the two-year-old gelding by Callaway's The Gipper and out of Callaway's I'm A Lady Too. The colorful chestnut was shown to the gallery well started and comfortable at the trot, wearing a snaffle bit.
Captivating Charm was a consignment from L. Fernandez Jr. and R. Fernandez, Trustees, Austin, Texas. The five-year-old gelding was shown under saddle by Sarah MacKenna for Hart to Hart Stables, Inc., Wyatt and Christine DeHart, Finchville, Kentucky, agents for the sellers. Campaigned on the Kentucky County Fair circuit in both the five-gaited and park divisions, this big horse appeared both ready and competitive. Tommy Richardson made the final offering of $21,000.00, and Captivating Charm will now reside in Lenoir City, Tennessee.

Jackie Ware was up for the Peter and Kim Cowart, Statesville, North Carolina, consignment Sergeant Bailey. The junior horse has been shown to success at Lexington Junior League, Kentucky State Fair, and The American Royal in both three-gaited and fine harness. Campaigned under saddle in the pavilion, the chestnut gelding appeared suitable for an amateur or juvenile. Sammy Judd, Maryville, Tennesse, received the $20,000.00 slip when the gavel fell.

The yearling consignment from Blythewood Farms LLC, Cleveland, Tennessee, was introduced to the public under saddle, with Steve Gassen in the irons. A First is the 2009 Yearling Champion of the Indiana and Southeastern Futurities, and she sold with engagements to both. Callaway's Undercover Blues got the nod from Larry Hodge, Springfield, Kentucky, along with an $18,000.00 offer to purchase. The three-year-old mare is a full sister to the previously mentioned Silver Brook Stables consignment, Callaway's My Blue Heaven. This mare was a consignment from Callaway Hills Stable, and profitably ridden by Kyle Peel.

Simpsonville, Kentucky, became the new home for a liver-chestnut gelding from New Bloomfield, foaled in 2007. Callaway's Can't You See, presented under saddle by Don Mace, captured an $18,000.00 bid from Ashlyn Farms LLC, for his work in the ring. By Callaway's Ghost Writer, the young gelding is out of One Worthy Lady by 3-T's Worthy One.
Another ticket in the amount of $18,000.00 was earned by the three-gaited pleasure and park mare, Sweet Southern Comfort. Aptly presented by Brandy Johnson for Donald L. Brockman, D.V.M, Campbellsville, Kentucky, this daughter of Slam Dunk H.G. is now the property of Carson Kressley, New York, New York.
The seasoned campaigner Your Eminence, from Dr. and Mrs. Louis D. Johnson, Lexington, Kentucky, was offered to the public with Bret Day, up, Grey Ridge Farm, as agent, Versailles, Kentucky. This grand horse did everything asked, from five gaits to a flat walk, and will make a substantial contribution to future ribbons for Deborah Richardson, Lenoir City, Tennessee. Your Eminence sold for $17,500.00.

Robert Hirshon appreciated the ring time of Callaway's Outta Here enough to offer $16,000.00 to duplicate the performance in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The two-year-old gelding was from the select session held Friday evening, and was put through his work with Burt Honaker in the saddle. By Callaway's Blue Norther and out of a Caramac daughter, she is bred for five gaits in future work.

My Ultimatum, a consignment from Carol A. and/or David F. Frazier, Free Union, Virginia, has captured success, and appeared ready to continue his career in Arizona for new owners Lisa and Mike Valletta. The young gelding has plenty of color and motion to get noticed, and required a $15,500.00 nod for ownership exchange. Bill Shiflet, Gordonsville, Virginia, presented the offering.

Dr. Alan R. Raun's, Reedannland, Cumming, Iowa, entry, Treasure The Glory, was shown earlier in the year to good result in the Three-Year-Old Five-Gaited Stake at Shelbyville. Mike Tunstall, Finchville, Kentucky, put him through his gaits for the gallery. Sharon Ellington, Ripplemead, Virginia, made the selection of this gelding for a final asking price of $15,000.00.
TST/Tattersalls concluded its Fall Sale with averages just slightly lower than the 2008 respective figures. The average for horses sold in Friday Eveningís session was markedly up, while OUTs and RNA's remained consistent with past comparative sales. The slight decrease in the average of the Saddlebred market appears to be not only palatable but also hopeful.
